Fantaisie Militaire est le dernier album d'Alain Bashung des années 90. C'est aussi le plus populaire de ses albums, tant sur le plan critique que commercial. Il a reçu de nombreux prix, dont celui de l'album de l'année et de la vidéo de l'année pour le single "La Nuit Je Mens". (Thom Jurek - Allmusic)

Le 06 Janvier 1998 paraissait "Fantaisie militaire" le dixième album studio d’Alain Bashung.

 

Lorsqu’en 1995, après la tournée de l'album Chatterton Alain Bashung se sépare de sa femme Chantal il est admis en maison de repos pour dépression. Il est alors comme le “soldat sans joie” de la chanson qui inspirera le titre de son futur album. A cette époque il reçoit fréquemment la visite de son ami le parolier Jean Fauque, avec qui il collabore depuis 1989.

Fauque est devenu le partenaire de jeux de mots attitré de Bashung, depuis le succès d’Osez Joséphine, puis de Ma petite entreprise et de l’album Chatterton,

Pas sûr toutefois qu’ils aient le cœur à rire, ni que leurs réflexes télépathiques s’accordent avec autant d’harmonie qu’hier, mais ils possèdent un peu de temps devant eux.

Le duo se remet donc au travail. Chaque nuit, le parolier écrit des textes qu'il transmet à son ami chez lui le lendemain.

L’enregistrement de l’album aura lieu durant l’été 1997 dans le sud de la France, sous la direction du producteur Ian Caple (Tindersticks, Tricky, Echo & the Bunnymen) avec les Valentins, une rythmique anglaise et Adrian Utley, le guitariste de Portishead.

A sa sortie, les critiques sont unanimes.

D’un romantisme échevelé se réclamant de la luxuriance mélodique de Burt Bacharach, mais aussi des éléments de trip-hop, ainsi que du verbe de Léo Ferré, Fantaisie Militaire est considéré comme un chef d’œuvre dans la discographie de son auteur mais c’est également un des disques les plus importants de tous les temps dans l’univers de la chanson francophone.

Le son y est irréprochable, les mélodies parfaites, les arrangements géniaux de créativité et d'inventivité, les textes toujours aussi surréalistes et renversants.

Fantaisie militaire est un disque envoutant par son ambiance nocturne, mélancolique et parfois torturé.

La nuit je mens, le single de l’album sera le grand tube du disque.

Bien qu’il soit difficile, comme c’est souvent le cas avec Bashung d’en saisir le sens, la profondeur et l’intensité avec laquelle il chante ne peut qu’émouvoir.

On y décèle des références à la seconde guerre mondiale, d’où la mention du Vercors, haut lieu de la résistance française ou « la station Balnéaire » qui pourrait être Vichy.

L’autre interprétation, plus évidente, est celle d’une histoire d’amour, sensuelle, avec une jeune femme (“t’étais pas née”), à qui il fait croire toutes sortes de choses pour ne pas la perdre (“un jour au cirque, un autre à chercher à te plaire”).

Il faudra 4 ans à l’artiste pour digérer ce succès colossal et revenir avec une nouvelle œuvre, encore plus torturée et bien plus exigeante, musicalement parlant. Mais c’est une autre histoire.

On January 06,1998, Alain Bashung's tenth studio album "Fantaisie militaire" was released.

 

When in 1995, after the tour following the album “Chatterton”, Alain Bashung separated from his wife Chantal, he is admitted to a rest home for depression. He is then like the "soldier without joy" of the song that will inspire the title of his future album. At this time, he frequently receives the visit of his friend the lyricist Jean Fauque, with whom he’s been collaborating since 1989.

Fauque has become Bashung's regular wordplay partner since the success of “Osez Joséphine”, then “Ma petite enterprise” and the album “Chatterton”.

Not sure, however, that they are in mood for laughing, nor that their telepathic reflexes are as harmonious as yesterday, but they do have a little time ahead of them.

The duo is back to work. Every night, the lyricist writes lyrics that he passes on to his friend at home the next day.

The recording of the album will take place during the summer of 1997 in the south of France, under the direction of producer Ian Caple (Tindersticks, Tricky, Echo & the Bunnymen) with the Valentins, an English rhythm section and Adrian Utley, Portishead's guitarist.

When it came out, the critics were unanimous.

With a disheveled romanticism drawing its inspiration from the melodic luxuriance of Burt Bacharach, but also elements of trip-hop, as well as the prose of Léo Ferré, Fantaisie Militaire is considered as a masterpiece in the singer's discography, but it is also one of the most important records of all time in the universe of the French-speaking song.

The sound is flawless; the melodies perfect, the arrangements are bursting with creativity and inventiveness, the lyrics always as surreal and stunning.

Fantaisie militaire is a bewitching record with its nocturnal, melancholic and sometimes tortured atmosphere.

“La nuit je mens”, the single from the album will be the big hit of the record.

Although it is difficult, as is often the case with Bashung, to grasp its meaning, the depth and intensity with which he sings can only be moving.

There are references to the Second World War, hence the mention of the Vercors, the Mecca of the French resistance or "La station balnéaire"  (the seaside resort) which could allude to Vichy, a spa and resort town that was the seat of the French government during that time.

The other interpretation, more obvious, is that of a love story, sensual, with a young woman ("you weren't born"), whom he makes believe all sorts of things to keep her ("one day at the circus, another one tried to seduce you").

It will take 4 years for the artist to digest this colossal success and come back with a new album, even more tortured and more demanding than ever. But that's another story.
