Le 04 janvier 1967 sortait le tout premier disque éponyme des Doors.
J’ai découvert le premier album des Doors après qu’une des mes connaissances, majeure à l’époque, avait été au cinéma voir le film « Apocalypse now » (celui-ci étant interdit aux mineurs) et m’avait fait des éloges de la bande-son dans lequel on entend le morceau « The end » sur fond d’hélicoptères survolant la jungle vietnamienne. J’étais impressionné par la voix sauvage et en même temps veloutée de Jim Morrison. La virtuosité musicale des autres membres du groupe était également remarquable.
L'album fut immédiatement salué par la critique et fut un énorme succès commercial , notamment grâce à la présence magnétique de leur leader, Jim Morrison, sorte de chaman incantatoire dont le chant est habité par un feu intérieur incandescent.
Lorsqu'ils entrèrent dans un studio d'Hollywood en Août 1966, afin d'y enregistrer leur premier album,le groupe était déjà bien rodé. Des mois à écumer la scène du whisky a Go Go, célèbre club rock de L.A, en tant que groupe phare avait fait d'eux un quatuor expérimenté qui pouvait improviser et partir dans toutes les directions musicales avec une grande facilité.
Leur musique épousait les tendances musicales de l'époque en passant du blues à la pop, du folk baroque au psychédélisme, y incluant des touches de jazz et de musique classique, telle que l'intro à l'orgue de Ray Manzarek inspirée par Bach sur le mythique "light my fire", un des morceaux charnières de l'album. La chanson sera d'ailleurs N°1 au hit parade Américain durant l'été 67.
L'autre pièce de résistance de ce disque est cette chanson fleuve qu'est "The end" et qui clôt l'album dans une ambiance "apocalyptique" 😜 (ce morceau étant le titre emblématique du film "Apocalypse now" de Francis Ford Coppola , sorti en 1979). Dans cette chanson, Jim Morrison semble plus possédé que jamais, notamment lorsqu'il s'adresse à ses parents dans une espèce de dialogue empreint de tension œdipienne et de folie meurtrière.
Emmené par le son virevoltant de l'orgue de Ray Manzarek (le groupe n'ayant pas de bassiste, les sons de basse étaient faits par la main gauche du clavier), la musique des Doors était enjouée et sérieuse, déglinguée et studieuse, branchée et quelque peu prétentieuse, selon certains détracteurs du groupe qui reprochent aux textes de Jim Morrison de manquer d'humour et de détachement.
N'empêche, l'album restera comme une pierre angulaire de la cathédrale rock. Et leur leader, Jim Morrison deviendra une de ses icônes les plus adulées. Il mourra à Paris le 3 juillet 1971 à l'âge de 27 ans (bienvenue au club ! 😔) et sera enterré au cimetière du Père-Lachaise. Les Doors tenteront de reprendre du service sans leur leader charismatique. Mais c'est une autre histoire..

On January 04,1967 the very first Doors eponymous record was released.
I discovered the Doors' first album after one of my acquaintances, who was an adult at the time, had gone to the cinema to see the film "Apocalypse now" (this one being forbidden to the under-aged) and had praised the soundtrack in which we hear the song "The end" against a background of helicopters flying over the Vietnamese jungle. I was amazed by Jim Morrison's wild yet velvety voice. The musical virtuosity of the other members of the group was also remarkable.
The album was immediately acclaimed by the critics and was a huge commercial success, thanks in particular to the magnetic presence of their leader, Jim Morrison, a sort of incantatory shaman whose singing seems to be inhabited by an incandescent inner fire.
When the Doors entered a Hollywood recording studio to make their debut album at the end of August 1966, they knew what they wanted.
Months of serving as house band at the Whisky a Go Go had sharpened their playing and performing skills to the point where one member of the quartet could abruptly swerve toward a new direction and the others would follow without missing a beat.
Their music embraced the musical trends of the time, moving from blues to pop, from baroque folk to psychedelia, including touches of jazz and classical music, such as Ray Manzarek's Bach-inspired organ intro to the mythical "light my fire", one of the album's pivotal pieces. The song will be N°1 on the American charts during the summer of 67.
The other "pièce de resistance" of this record is the song "The end" which closes the album in an "apocalyptic" atmosphere 😜 (this song being the emblematic title of the film "Apocalypse now" by Francis Ford Coppola, released in 1979). In this song, Jim Morrison seems more possessed than ever, especially when he addresses his parents in a kind of dialogue full of oedipal tension and murderous madness.
Led by the twirling sound of Ray Manzarek's organ (since the band had no bass player, the bass sounds were made by the left hand of the keyboard), the Doors' music was playful and serious, stoned and studious, hip and somewhat pretentious, according to some of the band's detractors who criticized Jim Morrison's lyrics for lacking humor and detachment.
Nevertheless, the album will remain as a cornerstone of the rock cathedral. And their leader, Jim Morrison will become one of its most adored icons. He died in Paris on July 3, 1971 at the age of 27 (welcome to the club! 😔) and was buried in the Père-Lachaise cemetery. The Doors will try to resume their career without their charismatic leader. But that's another story...
