 Le 02 janvier 1971 sortait le disque d'Elvis Presley intitulé 'Elvis Country'.

 

J'ai découvert cet album pour Noël 1977, peu de temps après la mort du "King". C'est en effet à ce moment là que j'ai vraiment commencé à écouter de la musique de façon beaucoup plus sérieuse. Et Elvis fut celui qui me montra la voie. Avec l'argent de poche que j'avais obtenu pour les fêtes de fin d'année, je courus chez le premier disquaire qui se trouvait sur mon chemin. Je voulais un album d'Elvis, j'étais sûr de cela. Mais lequel ? C'est l'attendrissante pochette d'un Elvis version bébé qui fit basculer mon choix.

"Elvis Country" est le onzième album studio d'Elvis Presley (hors musiques de film). Il atteignit la 12ème place du Billboard 200 (hit-parade Américain) et se classa 6ème au Royaume-uni, vendant plus d'un million de copies dans le monde entier, devenant disque d'or en 1977.

Artistiquement parlant, Elvis était revenu sur le devant de la scène trois ans plus tôt avec son 1968 comeback special, suivi du brilliant " From Elvis in Memphis" en 1969 et du mi-studio mi-scène "That's the way it is" un an plus tard.

En janvier 1971 sortit enfin l'album "Elvis country" dans lequel l'artiste replonge vers ses racines country and western en utilisant cependant des sonorités plus modernes. C'est un Elvis au meilleur de sa forme et c'est l'un de ses meilleurs albums.

Elvis retourna en studio en juin 70 pour y enregistrer 35 chansons. Lorsqu'il réalisa qu'il y en avait un bon nombre dans le style country, il décida alors de mettre un grand nombre d'entre elles sur un album, ce qui créa une cohésion musicale proche d'un concept album.

Chaque morceau est relié par un court extrait d'une chanson intitulée " I was born about 10 000 years ago". La chanson complète n'apparait entièrement que sur les récentes rééditions CD de l'album. 

Le son alterne entre ballades et morceaux plus enlevés. Il sonne mélancolique sur "Funny how time slips away" de Willie Nelson et déchaîné sur "I washed my hands in muddy water". Le groupe qui l'accompagne n'est rien d'autre que son groupe de scène de l'époque avec le légendaire James Burton à la guitare.

"Elvis Country" est un superbe album country, mais une country dont le son se rapproche plus des Flying burrito brothers de Gram Parsons que de garth Brooks. Elvis ne réussira plus à sortir un album aussi cohérent durant le reste de sa carrière qui s'achèvera le 16 Août 1977. Mais, c'est une autre histoire.

On January 2, 1971, Elvis Presley's album 'Elvis Country' was released.

I discovered this album for Christmas 1977, shortly after the death of the "King". That's when I really started listening to music in a much more serious way. And Elvis was the one who showed me the way. With the pocket money I'd gotten for the holidays, I ran to the first record store nearby. I wanted an Elvis album, I was sure about that. But which one? It was the touching cover of a toddler Elvis that was decisive in my final choice.
  

Elvis Country is the eleventh studio album by Elvis Presley, (except film music albums). It reached number 12 on the Billboard 200. It peaked at number six in the United Kingdom, selling over one million copies worldwide. It was certified Gold on December 1,1977

Elvis Presley started a great run with his 1968 Comeback Special, then went on to the brilliant From Elvis in Memphis, in 1969, and the studio/live That’s the Way It Is in 1970. And then…

In January 1971 Elvis Presley returned with Elvis Country and again the artist was addressing his roots, though with some more modern sounds. This is Elvis at the top of his game, and it is one of his best albums.

Elvis returned to the studio in mid-June of 1970 and cut 35 tracks. When he realized that he had a large number of straight country songs on tape he decided to release them together on one album.This created a kind of cohesiveness close to  a concept album.

Each song was connected by short sound bites from the song, “I Was Born About Ten Thousand Years Ago.” The complete song has been added to the modern-day CD releases as a bonus track.  

The sound alternates between loud and soft and he gets the vocal intonations just right. He sounds wistful on the old Willie Nelson tune, “Funny How Time Slips Away” and goes up-tempo on songs like“I Washed My Hands In Muddy Water”.

The band that accompanies him is nothing more than his stage band of the time with the legendary James Burton on guitar.

"Elvis Country" is a superb country album, but one whose sound is closer to Gram Parsons' Flying burrito brothers than to Garth Brooks. Elvis will not be able to release such a coherent album during the rest of his career which will end on August 16, 1977. But that's another story.
