« Jailbreak » est le sixième album du groupe Irlandais, Thin Lizzy. Il est sorti le 26 Mars 1976.

 

Il arrive souvent qu'en en énumérant les groupes de rock les plus grands et les plus influents du passé, on en oublie certains, et Thin Lizzy fait souvent partie de ceux-ci. Le groupe, formé à Dublin en 1969 va connaître son premier succès en 1973 avec le single "Whiskey in the Jar", adaptation d’une vieille chanson folk irlandaise à la sauce pop-rock seventies. Mais ce n’est que trois ans plus tard, en 1976, à la sortie de « Jailbreak », que le groupe va devenir une référence musicale de son époque. Avec des textes écrits presque entièrement par Phil Lynott, le chanteur devient la véritable âme du groupe, grâce à ses talents de compositeur, sa voix chaude et son charisme dont le look afro-vaudou rappelle furieusement Jimi Hendrix, avec une basse à la place de la guitare.

Sur leur précédent album "Fighting", Thin Lizzy avait enfin trouvé la recette qui allait être leur marque de fabrique : Les sons de deux guitares jouées en solo et en simultané et qui allait être porté à la perfection sur ce nouvel album.

A l’époque le groupe était sous pression, car leur maison de disques, excédée par l’échec de leurs deux précédents opus avait prévenu que ce disque serait celui de leur dernière chance. Les chansons furent donc écrites et enregistrées dans l'urgence.

Cette pression leur sera cependant bénéfique car « Jailbreak » sera considéré à sa sortie comme l'apogée du groupe et comme l'un des meilleurs albums de hard rock de tous les temps.

L’album n’est certes pas sans défauts (2 ou 3 titres me semblent dispensables) mais il contient quelques chansons, dont l’incontournable « The boys are back in town »  qui représentent ce qu’il y a de mieux dans le style « Hard-rock ».

La chanson éponyme "Jailbreak" ouvre cet album de manière grandiose en nous avertissant qu'il y a eu une évasion quelque part en ville. Les fugitifs, poursuivis par la police, font des siennes et il est plus prudent de ne pas entraver leur fuite. L’intro est un riff de guitare auquel s'ajoute la guitare wah-wah, la voix de Lynott venant se greffer sur l’ensemble. Après le premier couplet, on retrouve un refrain mené par la voix de Phil et la guitare devient rythmique tandis que la batterie fait des roulements magistraux; dans l'interlude, la basse précède le cri " Breakoooout ! " qui est suivi par le son des alarmes et des sirènes accompagnées d'un riff de guitare, nous rappelant l'évasion en cours, puis un autre couplet suit et laisse place à un dernier refrain qui clôt la chanson. Epoustouflant !

La deuxième chanson, "Angel from the coast", se différencie dès les premières notes de la précédente, les paroles étant structurées comme un poème dont le contenu est parfois arrosé de sarcasme cynique où l'on retrouve différents personnages : Angel, une femme fatale, Sally la joueuse de poker, l'ivrogne et enfin un vagabond dans le hall. Outre les grandes qualités de Lynott en tant que parolier, cette chanson offre un son aux multiples facettes, allant du Hard Rock aux influences de la musique irlandaise. Dans l'intro, les deux guitares se chevauchent pendant une dizaine de secondes avant que Lynott ne commence le premier couplet en introduisant le chant et la basse, accompagné par la batterie.

Le titre suivant, "Running Back", a clairement été écrit pour devenir un tube radiophonique et l'ensemble de l'arrangement est orienté vers des sons plus pop. L'intro commence avec le clavier, accompagné par la guitare qui joue une boucle de trois accords. La voix de Phil commence calme et rauque tandis que le clavier répète le même passage initial, les guitares s'entremêlent tout en restant presque en arrière-plan par rapport à la voix et au clavier. La chanson se termine avec le refrain répété deux fois et la voix de Lynott qui accompagne les instruments à la fin en fredonnant un "na na na na", rendant l'influence de Van Morrison particulièrement évidente.

"The Boys Are Back in Town" est le grand classique de l’album et un des titres les plus populaires de Thin Lizzy et du mouvement hard-rock. Il semble que la chanson ait été inspirée à Lynott par les fans de Manchester United , dont Lynott était lui même supporter, et qui descendaient en ville pour passer du bon temps avec les filles, boire et parfois se battre ou faire la fête toute la nuit. La chanson commence par un riff dans lequel se détache la basse de Phil avant que sa voix ne commence à se faire entendre pour le premier couplet. Le refrain, qui n'est rien d'autre que la répétition du titre de la chanson est chantée par Lynott et les guitaristes Robertson et Gorham. Entre les différents couplets et refrains, on peut entendre comment les deux jouent simultanément le même riff (twin lead guitar), véritable marque de fabrique du groupe comme déjà évoqué plus haut.

« Fight or Fall", semble presque être une prière ou une pensée intime adressée à un frère, à qui Lynott dit être devenu un homme. Avec un rythme plus cadencé et plus calme que la chanson précédente, elle introduit l'utilisation d'une guitare acoustique, l'instrument central de toute la chanson ; la voix de Phil est douce et calme, et est seulement accentuée par l'effet stéréo mis sur la voix lorsqu'il dit pendant le refrain " I tell-a myself ", les mêmes riffs se succèdent pendant toute la durée de la chanson qui se termine par un refrain qui récite " Brother, brother " jusqu'à la fin. L'influence de Springsteen et de Van the Man est toujours constante et la voix de Lynott semble presque être un hommage à celle d'Hendrix.

"Cowboy Song", avec son histoire digne d’un scénario de Clint Eastwood parle d'un cow-boy qui chevauche seul tout en se remémorant ses aventures amoureuses. La chanson commence tranquillement, ponctuée par le son d'une guitare et la voix de Phil qui chante les trois premiers vers du premier couplet ; soudain, un riff de basse s'interpose, les guitares et la batterie se joignent et la voix reprend le premier couplet. Le refrain suit, pendant lequel les harmonies vocales s'accordent parfaitement avec le duo de guitares. Le solo central est glaçant, à la fin duquel il est temps de réciter le dernier couplet, après quoi un dernier solo nous laisse en extase et la chanson se termine par le refrain final.

Bien que les autres titres de l’album ne soient pas aussi marquants, il y a suffisamment de grandes chansons sur ce disque pour en faire une œuvre incontournable digne de figurer dans toute discothèque personnelle.

La carrière de Thin Lizzy se poursuivra tant bien que mal avec leur leader Phil Lynott, devenant de plus en plus accro aux drogues, notamment l’héroïne. Il succombera d’une overdose en 1986, mettant un terme aux activités du groupe. Le chanteur deviendra une véritable légende, notamment dans son pays, où une statue de lui sera érigée au centre de Dublin. Mais c’est une autre histoire...

“Jailbreak” is the sixth studio album by Irish band Thin Lizzy, released on March 26, 1976

 

It often happens that when listing the greatest and most influential rock bands of the past, some are forgotten, and Thin Lizzy is often one of them. The band, formed in Dublin in 1969, had its first success in 1973 with the single "Whiskey in the Jar", an adaptation of an old Irish folk song in a seventies pop-rock style. But it's only three years later, in 1976, with the release of "Jailbreak", that the band will become a musical reference of its time. With lyrics written almost entirely by Phil Lynott, the singer becomes the real mastermind of the band, thanks to his talents as a composer, his warm voice and his charisma, whose afro-voodoo look is tremendously reminiscent of a Jimi Hendrix playing bass guitar.

On their previous album "Fighting", Thin Lizzy had finally found the recipe that would be their trademark: the sounds of two guitars played solo and simultaneously and that would be carried to perfection on this new album.

At the time the band was under pressure, because their record company, fed up with the failure of their two previous albums, had warned that this record would be their last chance. The songs were therefore written and recorded in a hurry.

This pressure would however be beneficial to them because "Jailbreak" will be considered at its release as the apogee of the band and as one of the best hard rock albums of all time.

The album is certainly not without flaws (2 or 3 tracks seem to me dispensable) but it contains some songs, of which the unavoidable "The boys are back in town" which represent what is the best in the "Hard-rock" genre.

The eponymous song "Jailbreak" opens this album in grand fashion by warning us that there has been a jailbreak somewhere in town. The fugitives, pursued by the police, are acting up and it's safer not to impede their escape. The intro is a guitar riff to which a wah-wah pedal is added, with Lynott's voice grafted onto the whole. After the first verse, there is a chorus led by Phil's voice and the guitar becomes rhythmic while the drums make masterful rolls; in the interlude, the bass precedes the cry "Breakoooout! " which is followed by the sound of alarms and sirens accompanied by a guitar riff, reminding us of the escape in progress, then another verse follows and gives way to a final chorus that closes the song. Stunning!

The second song, "Angel from the Coast", differs from the first notes of the previous one, the lyrics being structured like a poem whose content is sometimes sprinkled with cynical sarcasm where we find different characters: Angel, a femme fatale, Sally the poker player, the drunk man and finally a vagrant in the hall. In addition to Lynott's great qualities as a lyricist, this song offers a multifaceted sound, ranging from hard rock to Irish music influences. In the intro, the two guitars overlap for about ten seconds before Lynott begins the first verse by introducing vocals and bass, accompanied by drums.

The following track, "Running Back", was clearly written to be a radio hit and the whole arrangement is oriented towards more pop sounds. The intro begins with the keyboard, accompanied by the guitar playing a three-chord loop. Phil's voice begins quiet and husky while the keyboard repeats the same initial passage, the guitars intermingle while remaining almost in the background of the voice and keyboard. The song ends with the chorus repeated twice and Lynott's voice accompanying the instruments at the end by humming a "na na na na", making Van Morrison's influence particularly evident.

"The Boys Are Back in Town" is the classic of the album and one of the most popular songs of Thin Lizzy and the hard rock movement. It seems that the song was inspired to Lynott by the Manchester United fans, of which Lynott himself was a fan, who would go down to the city to have a good time with the girls, drink and sometimes fight or party all night. The song begins with a riff in which Phil's bass stands out before his voice begins to be heard for the first verse. The chorus, which is nothing more than a repetition of the song's title, is sung by Lynott and guitarists Robertson and Gorham. Between the different verses and choruses, we can hear how the two play simultaneously the same riff (twin lead guitar), real trademark of the band as already mentioned above.

"Fight or Fall," seems almost like a prayer or intimate thought addressed to a brother, to whom Lynott says he has become a man. With a more cadenced and calm rhythm than the previous song, it introduces the use of an acoustic guitar, the central instrument of the whole song; Phil's voice is soft and calm, and is only accentuated by the stereo effect put on the voice when he says during the chorus "I tell-a myself", the same riffs follow one another throughout the whole song which ends with a chorus that recites "Brother, brother" until the end. The influence of Springsteen and Van the Man is still constant and Lynott's voice almost seems to be a tribute to Hendrix's.

Cowboy Song", with its Clint Eastwood-esque storyline, is about a cowboy riding alone while reminiscing about his love affairs. The song begins quietly, punctuated by the sound of a guitar and Phil's voice singing the first three verses of the first verse; suddenly, a bass riff interjects, the guitars and drums join in, and the voice takes up the first verse. The chorus follows, during which the vocal harmonies perfectly match the guitar duet. The central solo is chilling, at the end of which it is time to recite the last verse, after which a final solo leaves us in ecstasy and the song ends with the final chorus.

While the other tracks on the album are not as prominent, there are enough great songs on this record to make it a must-have worthy of inclusion in any personal record collection.

The career of Thin Lizzy will continue as well as possible with their leader Phil Lynott, becoming more and more addicted to drugs, especially heroin. He succumbed to an overdose in 1986, putting an end to the band's activities. The singer will become a real legend, especially in his country, where a statue of him will be erected in the center of Dublin. But it is another history...
